The Recording Institute Of Detroit offers a six part path to complete training as a beginning Recording Engineer/Producer with the essential knowledge and skills to succeed in the field.  Students desiring training in the field have different goals and interests, but usually have one common objective, which is to get started in the field as fast as possible.  Because of the modular design of our programs, it is possible to get the training YOU need, customized to YOUR goals, by only taking the training sections that fit your needs.  The steps are:

Pro Audio Specialist Program*

     Students study essential audio and recording theory representing the minimum theory that needs to be mastered for employment. Training includes the basics of sound, microphones, mixers and consoles, dynamic processing, equalization, effects, mixing, equipment interconnection, sound reinforcement, analog/digital recording, MIDI production, DAW production, and mastering.
     Students are exposed and work with basic techniques for the specialty featured in the individual courses. Courses are available in the specialties of Band Recording, Pro Tools Basics, Cubase Basics. See individual course descriptions in catalog for a more in-depth description. 
Recording Techniques I Program**

5-12 weeks

     Essential training for live sound and recording technicians. Students study use of recording and sound reinforcement equipment including studio/stage setup of real instruments, with monitoring, recording, overdub & mixing using Pro Tools and a digital console. Students complete one course to complete the program.
     Working in crews or individually, the students practice and complete band recording, overdubbing and mixdown projects. See individual course descriptions in catalog for a more in-depth description.  
Associate Recording Engineer/Producer

3-9 Months

     Essential training for project recording engineer/producers. Students study recording and sound reinforcement equipment including studio/stage setup of real instruments, with monitoring, recording, overdub & mixing using Pro Tools and a digital console. Students also learn the basics of music theory as applied in popular production and the basic of the Music Business. Students learn electronic production techniques and demonstrate individual competency in recording & Mixing.  
     Students must complete three classes (Recording Techniques I, Introduction To Music, Production Techniques I). See individual course descriptions in catalog for a more in-depth description.   
Music Producer Program
(Associate REP or Recording Techniques I Prerequisite)

     Complete training for the project recording engineer and/or music producer. Students learn the technical and marketing functions that must be mastered to successfully release and market regional music product. Students study advanced mixing and mastering techniques using software by Digidesign, Steinberg and Izotope. Students also learn to market product through the web and use of social networks as well as planning and executing the promotion of musical events.  See individual course descriptions in catalog for a more in-depth description.   
Recording Engineer Program
(Associate REP or Recording Techniques I plus Production Techniques I Prerequisite)

4-7 Months

     Essential training for those working in post-production and other large scale studios. Students study advanced mixing and mastering techniques using software by Digidesign, Steinberg and Izotope. Students study post-production and large studio techniques in addition to more advanced techniques needed for a Recording Engineer.
